As promised, here is the pattern for the afghan. It's pretty easy if you know how to crochet. If you don't, and you want to learn how, there's TONS of good videos on You Tube, so go buy some yarn and a hook, and get goin'! Then come back, and use this pattern to make an afghan!
Row 1: ch 122
Row 2: hdc in 3rd st from hook, hdc in every st to end of the row.
Row 3: ch. 1, sc in first st., skip 2 st's, then make 5 dc's in next st, skip 2 st's, sc in next st, repeat until end of the row
Row 4: ch. 3, then do 2 dc in first st. skip 2 st's, 5 dc's in next st, skip 2 st's, sc in next st, skip 2 st's, repeat until last st, then do 3 dc's in last st.
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until it's as long as you want it.
Once it's as long as you want it, finish it off with a row of hdc in each st.
Then, add the scalloped trimming, and you're done!

I would use whatever size hook your type of yarn recommends. It should say on the label. Weight 4 usually recommends a size G or H, while weight 5 may need an I, J or even K.

This is a great afghan but I'm having trouble making sense of row 4.

Or something else? I've tried it both ways and neither seems to line up properly.

I have done an afghan with an almost identical stitch pattern. I believe the Row 4 repeat should start with the "skip 2 st, 5 dc", etc. The end result should be alternating shells throughout the afghan. Each 5dc will be done in the SC of the previous row. Each SC will be done in the middle DC of the 5dc shell from the previous row. I hope this helps.

I know WHICH hook I used, but we recently moved, and I forgot what size was printed on it. I need to find the hook in all my craft storage, so I can let you know. Sorry to keep you all hanging for so long. We've moved in the last couple of months, and I'm full term with baby #4, so life has been a little hectic to say the least! ReplyDeleteHi, there are many places that explain crochet abbreviations in depth and some are on Pinterest or available for free in ebook form to Kindle or Nook. However, to answer your question st=stitch dc=double crochet. Hope that helps.

I would assume it is a worsted weight yarn and a G or H hook.
ReplyDeleteFor the beginners, dc is a double crochet. There are many websites that will explain pattern abbreviations and show how to do the stitches.

I think the pattern should say something like:

Works fine for me :)

DeleteI think what is missing is the single st between the first dble sts and the 5 double sts. That puts the 5 dbles in the valley between the 5 doubles of your last row.
ReplyDeleteAfter working on this blanket I agree with MrsLovefool about the correction. However I have one more to make. It only works for me if I chain 123 instead of 122. The pattern seems to be (multiples of 6) +3. Then each row ends up being 121 stitches. Hope this helps everyone! :)

On this snowy very cold afternoon, it seems very apt to sit wrapped up in front of the TV hook in hand and get started on your Living Room Afgan, however, like others have asked, you omit the very basics such as what size hoot and yarn weight.
I guess we could hazard a guess, but I'm sure we'd all prefer to do it justice first time out, rather than be frustrated by the outcome because sufficient time and effort was not given over to the materials required.
I hope you only see this post as a 'Please help' we love your work cry...

Row 1: attach yarn, ch 1, sc around evenly, slip st into first ch 1
Row 2: Chain 3, dc around, slip st into top of beginning chain.

My mom had four in five and a half years~~~Not by choice~~~Mother Nature played a large part in it. The first month she stayed at home with her newborns. She nursed all of us for a year. Next to no help from my dad. I would've went stark-raving MAD!!!
You will need to chain multiple of 6+2 stitches. This is the correct amount. I used a size 4mm needle.
